Leelnau State Park features around 30 campsites for tents or campers, some located directly on the lake for stunning views and the soothing sound of waves. Campers can enjoy beautiful sunsets, walkable trails, and close proximity to the iconic lighthouse. However, the park is not without its quirks—there are no electric hookups or flush toilets, only shared pit toilets and water pumps, which can vary in cleanliness. Bugs are typical for Michigan summers, but strong winds off the lake often help keep them at bay. Raccoons are known to be bold, so storing food securely is essential. Despite this, I would describe the park as quiet, beautiful, and ideal for those seeking a serene outdoor getaway.
The park’s setting on the Leelanau Peninsula offers access to pristine dunes, rocky beaches, and views of the North and South Fox Islands. Northport, a small town just 10 minutes away, provides nearby amenities, including a grocery store.
Campsite #19
10/11/2024 – 10/12/2024
This last October, four friends and I spent a night camping at Leelanau State Park. We reserved campsite #19, which turned out to be right on the water. It has a short, stony path leading directly to the lakeshore. You won’t even have to forage far for firewood— there were plenty of lake-smoothed branches washed way up on the shore.
Campsite #19 has plenty of room—enough for three cars and three tents without feeling crowded. The picnic table was solid, and the fire ring was enclosed in cement, a personal favorite as someone prone to burns. The vault toilets throughout the entire campground were immaculate, a pleasant surprise.
A Word About the Water
While the amenities were great, we did notice one thing: the water had a strong iron and mineral smell and a yellow tint. It’s safe to drink, but we noticed many campers, including ourselves, bringing their own water. If you have less adventurous campers in your party you may want to bring a jug with you.
Exploring the Area
After setting up camp, making dinner and enjoying the serene lakeshore, we took a short walk to visit the nearby Leelanau Lighthouse. Walking up into the lighthouse was a bit pricey, so we enjoyed wandering the grounds. The scenic views from the park surrounding the lighthouse are free and worth the visit.
